The Minister for Justice and Reform of the Construction Sector Jonathan Attard participated in the Justice Council meeting held in Luxembourg, where EU justice ministers convened to discuss key developments in the field of justice across the Union. 

During the meeting, ministers exchanged views on the rule of law, with particular focus on political participation as a cornerstone of democratic governance. The Council also addressed efforts to combat impunity for crimes committed in connection with Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, reaffirming the EU’s unwavering commitment to international criminal accountability. 

A central item on the agenda concerned the future of Eurojust. Dr Attard reiterated Malta’s strong support for strengthening Eurojust’s analytical capabilities, particularly in tackling complex and cross-border crimes such as cybercrime, environmental crime, terrorism, and drug trafficking. He emphasised the importance of ensuring that Eurojust is equipped with the necessary tools and resources to remain effective and relevant in the face of evolving criminal threats. 

Minister Attard also welcomed proposals for Eurojust to take on a more proactive role in supporting national authorities, including early involvement in cross-border investigations, the facilitation of timely coordination meetings, and enhanced cooperation with Europol, the EPPO, and third countries. Dr. Attard underlined the importance of providing adequate resources and technological infrastructure to support these expanded functions, while ensuring full compliance with data protection standards. 

The meeting served as an important platform for Member States to align on shared justice priorities and to reinforce cooperation in safeguarding fundamental rights and upholding the rule of law across the European Union.
