No compromises on our national interests – Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg

Saturday, 25 October 2025, 06:14 Last update: about 8 months ago

Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Leader for Parliamentary Affairs Ian Borg said that there should be no compromises when it comes to Malta's national interests and social-democratic values. Closing the second session of the Labour Party's Annual General Conference, Borg said this principle guides the government's daily work with the people, driven by social justice under the Labour administration.

He noted that Malta has recognized the State of Palestine, stressing that the country's military neutrality must never be compromised "for anything or anyone." Borg added that Malta takes pride in having made the most of its 21 years of EU membership, while also maintaining strong relations with other nations such as China and the United States - emphasizing that "we must safeguard our own interests."

He explained that the Labour Party boasts a dynamic parliamentary group, with contributions not only from Cabinet members but also from backbenchers who present proposals and carry out work that translates into tangible benefits for the people.

He said that everyone in government who holds a decision-making role impacts families' lives, and it is for this reason that the Labour Party has continued to win elections since 2008 - because it has always cared for the people.

Borg remarked that the Maltese people continue to place their trust in Prime Minister Robert Abela and the Labour Party, as this is the party that plans for Malta's long-term vision while also addressing people's immediate needs through concrete action by the Labour Government.

He said that when people see this commitment, they are further convinced that the party still has the determination to keep leading Malta forward. Borg questioned who else could do so if not the Labour Party, adding that it would be better for those who travel abroad to put Malta first and foremost.

He pointed out that the Labour Government has taken bold decisions, such as in the cases of Comino and Manoel Island. Where shortcomings exist, he said, the government is ready to learn, listen, and engage with citizens and NGOs about the various realities they face.

Borg said that the Labour Party must continue strengthening its bond with the people by remaining close to them - meeting citizens door-to-door. He said the party remains open and continues to renew itself, and that under the "prudent leadership" of Prime Minister Robert Abela, the Labour Party will remain in government, because "we truly believe that Malta must always come first and foremost."
