The Malta Cross Music Competition successfully concluded its second edition, held from 7 to 9 April at the Malta Society of Arts. This year's winners included Ester Mullerová (violinist, Czech Republic), Ksenia Nyfyfrenko (pianist, Ukraine), and Julian Carter (pianist, Malta).

As part of the competition's prize structure, winners are awarded performance opportunities across Europe:

• 1st Prize - recital at the Ehrbar Hall, Vienna, Austria
• 2nd Prize - recital at the Emauzy Hall, Prague, Czech Republic
• 3rd Prize - recital at the Malta Society of Arts, Valletta, Malta

Maltese pianist Julian Carter, who achieved Third Prize this year, will present his prize recital on 9 December at 7pm at the Malta Society of Arts. His programme will feature a wide-ranging repertoire of film music and original arrangements, reflecting the versatility that earned him recognition at the competition. During the contest, Carter distinguished himself by performing across four genres: film music, classical repertoire, traditional folk, and pop music.

The Artistic Director of the competition, Frank Bonnici, expressed satisfaction that Malta was represented among the prize winners, noting Carter's achievement as a significant milestone for the local music scene.

Looking ahead, the 3rd edition of the Malta Cross Music Competition will take place from 20 to 22 April 2026, hosted at both the Malta Society of Arts and Teatru Manoel. The three-day programme will include educational talks, lectures, masterclasses, performances, and the competition itself, furthering the event's mission to nurture young talent and foster cultural exchange.

Admission to the December recital is free, though a donation of €10 at the door will be appreciated in support of the Malta Cross Music Competition.

Julian Carter - Biography

Maltese pianist Julian Carter is an emerging performer whose work bridges classical traditions with contemporary and cinematic music. Equally at home with core repertoire and his own arrangements, his artistic focus lies in adapting music for film, videogames, and other non-pianistic sources into engaging, virtuosic piano works.

He began piano studies at the age of six, later earning the Licentiate Diploma in Pianoforte Performance from the London College of Music (2011). Carter is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music Honours degree at the University of Malta, with a specialisation in composition. He has performed at leading Maltese venues including the Malta Society of Arts and Sala Isouard at Teatru Manoel.

In 2025, Carter achieved Third Prize in the Malta Cross Music Competition, and his upcoming recital on 9 December 2025 will showcase his latest set of film music arrangements, crafted to capture the drama and colour of the original scores. Alongside performance, he is developing original compositions for piano and small ensembles, with his long-standing interest in animation and illustration continuing to shape his creative outlook.
