A total of 10,061,969 passenger movements were registered at the Malta International Airport (MIA) in 2025, the company said.
MIA said that marks a 12.3% increase over the previous year.
"Additionally, while seat capacity increased by just over 13% year-on-year, the average seat load factor for the year remained largely unchanged at 85.4%."
Passenger traffic through MIA in December specifically totalled 709,352, representing a 19.9% increase compared to December 2024.
Aircraft movements throughout 2025 also increased by 11.4% to total 65,470 movements.
"The United Kingdom, Italy, Poland, Germany and France emerged as Malta International Airport's top five markets in 2025. While Italy and France were the only two markets to register a decline in passenger traffic compared to 2024, the remaining markets all recorded growth. Poland emerged as the airport's fastest-growing market, registering 48.9% year-on-year growth and capturing a market share of almost 9%."
Malta International Airport said in a statement that it continued to diversify its connectivity further in 2025, with the airport being connected to 111 airports across 37 markets throughout the year. The airport was served by 34 airlines, with four new airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Qatar Airways, SAS and Volotea, joining Malta International Airport's portfolio in 2025.
Low-cost carriers played a significant role in network expansion, with Ryanair, Wizz Air and easyJet increasing flight frequencies and introducing routes to key European markets, particularly in the Northern and Eastern regions, it said.
"In parallel, Malta International Airport continued to build a more balanced airline portfolio, pairing the scale of low-cost carriers with the network reach of flag-carriers. Three of the four airlines that commenced operations from Malta in 2025 were flag-carriers, with Qatar Airways connecting Malta to a major global hub in Doha, LOT further strengthening links with the Polish market, and SAS Scandinavian Airlines enhancing connectivity with Scandinavia."
2026 forecast
Looking ahead, Malta International Airport said it will continue to enhance Malta's accessibility across strategic markets while further addressing seasonality.
"As traffic through the airport surpassed the 10 million mark in 2025, winter traffic grew by 16% year on year, outpacing growth in the summer months by 5 percentage points. For 2026, Malta International Airport is forecasting total passenger movements of approximately 10.5 million. This outlook reflects a strong start to the year, with more moderate growth expected for the remainder of the year, compared with 2025."
In terms of route development, Senior Vice President for Traffic Development Alex Cardona said, "Our focus remains on building a diversified route network for the Maltese Islands. In 2026, we will continue to grow connectivity across Eastern and Northern Europe and Scandinavia through the introduction of new routes, alongside the addition of weekly frequencies on a number of existing services. We are also set to introduce Malta's first long-haul link to North America operated by a US carrier, with the launch of a new Delta Air Lines service to New York."
