On Wednesday afternoon, the Civil Protection Department was alerted to an individual who had fallen into the sea and was unable to return to shore in the area beneath Fort St. Elmo, Valletta, the department said on its social media page.

"Rescue teams from Fire Stations 2 and 5 were immediately dispatched to the scene, where the individual was successfully located and safely recovered using a CPD RHIB."

"The rescued person was transported to the Armed Forces of Malta base at Haywharf, where he was assessed on site by an Emergency Department team and subsequently admitted to Mater Dei Hospital for further medical care."

The Civil Protection Department extended its appreciation to all responding entities for their coordinated assistance.
