Restoration works at the St Nicholas Bastion in Bormla are now underway, the Ministry of Culture said in a statement.
Works started in November 2025, following preparatory phases. The project is being supervised by the Restoration and Preservation Department.
A major part of the bastion was severely damaged during World War II bombings. The project includes rebuilding the destroyed upper section. The goal is to restore the bastion to its original form while respecting its historical value. Careful, traditional materials and techniques are being used. The works form part of a broader, holistic restoration of Cottonera fortifications.
Officials link this restoration to cultural tourism growth and increasing demand for hidden historical niches. This is because Cottonera is becoming a popular tourist destination.
"The project has the aim of conserving and strengthening the historical and cultural value of the St Nicholas Bastion," said Culture Minister Owen Bonnici.
According to architect Jean Frendo, the restoration includes rebuilding sections to match the original architectural features.
