Nationalist MP Adrian Delia has alleged that he received threats and intimidation shortly after participating in a parliamentary hearing on ambassadorial appointments.

Delia filed a breach of privilege case with Speaker Anglu Farrugia during Monday’s plenary session.

Speaking in Parliament, Delia recounted events that unfolded following a session of the Public Appointments Committee held last Wednesday afternoon. The committee was reviewing two candidates nominated for ambassadorial roles, Roseanne Camilleri and Marco Micallef, with Delia serving as one of three opposition representatives.

Delia stated that his role during the session was strictly professional. “I was there to do my job,” he said, emphasising that his questions were limited to matters directly related to the positions under consideration.

However, less than 24 hours later, Delia reported receiving a troubling message. According to his statement, the message arrived on Thursday morning at 10:41am and was sent by an individual he described as the partner of one of the candidates.

The message, which Delia said bore the title “Even the devil can cite scripture,” contained what Delia described as threats, intimidation, and attempts at blackmail. He argued that the nature of the communication could constitute a breach of parliamentary privilege.

Delia told Parliament that he is prepared to submit all relevant evidence, including the identity of the sender and the mobile device used to receive the message, for further investigation.

“I nor any other member of the opposition will be intimidated by messages of blackmail,” he declared, stressing that such actions must not interfere with the duties of elected representatives.

Calling for institutional safeguards, Delia urged the Speaker to take immediate steps to address the situation and ensure accountability. He also highlighted the broader need for respect toward members of Parliament, insisting they must be allowed to carry out their responsibilities without fear or interference.

During the committee session, Delia grilled Roseanne Camilleri – who was nominated for the role of Non-Resident Ambassador to Liechtenstein – over reports of major cost overruns during her time as the CEO of Primary Health Care.
