‘A Darkness Over Rashford’. Author: Adrian Buckle. Publisher: Unifaun Publishers / 2026. Pages: 282. Words by Michael Psaila

In this  second book in Adrian Buckle's DEOS IRÆ Trilogy, offers an ambitious mix of mythology, cosmic horror, and personal themes like queer identity, grief, and trauma. While it has undeniable strengths that will appeal to fans of dark, introspective speculative fiction, it also comes with some drawbacks that might not suit every reader.

On the positive side, Buckle's storytelling is immersive and thematically rich, skillfully blending supernatural elements with real-world issues such as war and emotional recovery. The exploration of LGBTQ+ relationships feels authentic and empowering, adding a layer of depth that elevates the narrative beyond typical horror tropes. The vivid world-building, drawing from diverse mythologies, creates a haunting atmosphere that's both thrilling and thought-provoking, making it a solid pick for mature teens and adults who enjoy intense, character-driven tales with a focus on resilience.

That said, the book's rich mythological framework offers impressive depth, though readers who prefer a more direct narrative may find it demanding at times. Its quieter, introspective passages create space for emotional and thematic development, even if they may feel slower to those looking for a more action-driven pace. The vivid treatment of violence and trauma gives the story considerable intensity, which may not suit every reader, and the layered, intricate prose invites careful reading in order to fully appreciate its nuances.

Overall, this is a compelling read with heart and horror in equal measure, earning a solid 4 out of 5 stars. It's best suited for those who appreciate layered, dark fantasy, with queer love as a bonus. Buckle shows great promise, and I'm curious to see how the trilogy concludes!
