ADPD-The Green Party strongly advocated for the right of Maltese citizens residing overseas to cast their votes in national elections at Maltese embassies. This is the bare minimum that can be done, the party said in a statement Wednesday.
ADPD candidate for districts 12 and 13, Luke Caruana, highlighted the current system's failings: "During yet another general election, we are once again hearing reports of Maltese citizens living abroad facing significant difficulties in booking flights to return to Malta just to vote."
In a period of global economic uncertainty, the government's continued practice of subsidising these flights with taxpayers' money is irresponsible. Instead, Malta should adopt the standard practice of all civil and democratic EU states, providing every Maltese citizen with the option to vote at their nearest Maltese embassy or via electronic means. This is a fundamental democratic right that must be guaranteed for all Maltese citizens.
ADPD-The Green Party Chairperson, and candidate on districts 6 and 12, Sandra Gauci, stressed the importance of accessible voting methods: "The voting rights of all Maltese citizens abroad must be secured through the most convenient and accessible methods available, consistent with advanced democracies. It is preposterous that the government persists with antiquated voting procedures that place an unnecessary strain on flight capacity during peak season."
