More than 34,000 pensioners will receive an additional €20.5 million between them by the end of May, following a series of pension adjustments and increases, the government said in a statement.
During a press conference, Social Policy and Children's Rights Minister Michael Falzon said the measures primarily affect pensioners born before 1962, widowed pensioners and service pensioners.
Falzon said the payments are in addition to the pension increases already introduced at the start of the year.
"Our word is our contract. We delivered what we promised and went beyond it," Falzon said.
He explained that the adjustment process for pensioners born before 1962 is now almost complete.
Since 2024, these pensioners have been guaranteed the same basic increase as pensioners born in or after 1962, in what the government described as a correction of the injustice created in 2006 between pensioners born before and after 1962.
As part of the adjustment process, pensioners born before 1962 whose pensionable income is higher than the revised ceiling are also receiving an additional increase in their pension.
The government said around 20,000 pensioners, including widowed pensioners, are benefiting from this measure, with the total amount reaching €16.5 million this year.
Falzon said that once the process is completed in two years' time, the highest pensionable income for those affected by the previous disparity will be the same for all pensioners regardless of when they were born.
He also referred to additional increases for widowed pensioners, saying the process will be completed in the coming months and will result in all widowed pensioners receiving the same pension rate their spouse would have received had they still been alive.
According to the government statement, around 7,000 widows are benefiting from this additional income, amounting to approximately €2.5 million this year.
The government also said that another process has been completed, through which the amount of service pension not considered for the purposes of the social security pension has increased by another €200 to €3,866.
