Mellieħa Mayor Gabriel Micallef has called for improvements to traffic management in the area following another traffic incident in Xemxija that caused congestion on surrounding roads.

In a Facebook post, Micallef said that the closure of roads in Xemxija once again resulted in traffic building up in other parts of the area.

The mayor said he immediately contacted Transport Malta, which was aware of the situation, as well as community police officers, with a view to closing the Miżieb road from the Mellieħa side to help ease congestion.

However, Micallef said the Mellieħa community police were dealing with another case at the time.

He reiterated a proposal to widen part of the Miżieb road, rather than the entire stretch, to create enough space for two cars to pass comfortably. He said this was another proposal that the authorities should continue to pursue.

Micallef also highlighted the need for digital traffic signs at the entrances to Manikata, Miżieb and Mellieħa. According to the mayor, such signs could automatically change traffic arrangements to a one-way system when incidents occur, helping authorities respond more efficiently and prevent congestion from spreading.

He said the proposal for digital signage is another measure that the local authorities are waiting to see implemented.

Micallef thanked the officials who assisted in managing the situation and helping to alleviate the traffic.
