'People who Make a Difference' is the central action of a programme of initiatives Malta International Airport is undertaking to observe the European Week for Health and Safety at Work, between 19 and 23 October.

The initiative gives airport employees, stakeholders, and third parties working on construction projects the opportunity to nominate colleagues who go above and beyond to contribute positively to the safety, health and wellbeing of others. Wellbeing champions will be recognised across three categories, following the evaluation of nominations by a panel led by Prof. Luke Fiorini from the Centre of Labour Studies at the University of Malta.

"Safety and wellbeing at work go beyond traditional employee benefits and the prevention of workplace accidents to include psychosocial aspects. In the spirit of this, it is becoming increasingly important to create work environments where employees and stakeholders feel engaged, supported, heard and valued. Our newly launched initiative adds peer recognition to our approach to holistic employee wellbeing, which has evolved over the years to include risk prevention, support, and employee participation at the workplace," said Daniela Borg, Lead Health and Safety Officer at Malta International Airport.

Employee participation was highlighted as one of the Company's strengths during an independent audit process, which led Malta International Airport to become the first ISO 45003-certified airport in the European Union in 2025.

Throughout the year, employees are encouraged to help shape a better workplace by sharing feedback through the annual health and safety survey, participating in focus groups, and standing for election to represent their colleagues on occupational health and safety matters.

Employees are also supported to choose healthier, more balanced lifestyles through the benefits of the Employee Wellbeing Programme. These include complimentary gym access, free eye care, a wellbeing allowance, and the delivery of fresh fruit to the offices. Team members experiencing challenging circumstances may also seek mental health support through the Company's partnerships with Caritas and Richmond Foundation.

"Employee wellbeing remains a strategic priority for Malta International Airport, contributing to both our people's growth and our organisation's long-term success. Through the 2025 employee survey, 88% of the respondents said they would recommend us as a good employer, motivating us to continue finding new ways to foster a workplace culture that inspires and empowers everyone to reach their full potential," said Alexia Aquilina, Head of People and Culture at Malta International Airport.

Earlier this year, the Company introduced the Healthy Habits Programme, through which employees have access to a nutritional and behavioural change coach, as well as regular on-site movement classes.

Ahead of the European Week for Health and Safety at Work, Malta International Airport welcomed Minister for Planning, Infrastructure and Employment Hon. Jonathan Attard, Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA) Chief Executive Officer Dr Josianne Cutajar, and OHSA Board Chairman Pierre Fava to learn more about its workplace health, safety and wellbeing initiatives.
