Dr Anthony H. Bartolo, 76, a retired obstetrician and gynaecologist who was a former president of the Monroe County Medical Society, died a few days ago in his home in Tipton, Michigan, USA.

Dr Bartolo had an obstetrical and gynaecological practice in Monroe from 1967 until 1993, when he moved his practice to Tecumseh, Michigan. There, he worked for Health Specialists of Lenawee until retiring in 2001. Over the years, he delivered more than 2,500 babies, including a set of triplets in 1984 at Mercy Memorial Hospital, his daughter Bettina Pearch said.

A native of Valletta, Dr Bartolo graduated in 1954 from Milan University Medical College in Italy, and a year later moved to the United States. He did his medical internship at Woman’s Hospital, Detroit, in 1955 and 1956.

He had his residency at Mercy Hospital, Toledo, from 1957 until 1959 and was later a major in the US Army Medical Corps in Germany and Italy from 1960 until his honourable discharge in 1965.

“His profession was very important to him,” his daughter Helen Luther said. “He was a very dedicated physician, very loyal and loving to his patients.”

During the blizzard of 1978, he remained at the hospital for five days rather than risk not being able to get back to his patients, she said.

In retirement, Dr. Bartolo enjoyed gardening and fishing.

He married Ghislaine Pieters in 1956. She died in 2003.

He is survived by his son Michael Bartolo, daughters Helen Luther, Denise Shelle, Bettina Pearch, and Monique De Leon, and 12 grandchildren.
