Round The world pilot arrives in the UK after calling at Malta

Malta Independent Tuesday, 18 April 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

A pilot who’s second port of call in flying round the world was Malta, has arrived safely back in Gloucestershire, in the UK.

The BBC reported that Manuel Queiroz, 57, had been hoping to complete the journey in a record 23 days, but bad weather in Hawaii hampered the trip. Mr Queiroz, who recovered from colon cancer five years ago, is also raising money for Cancer Research UK from his flight.

He touched down at RAF Staverton on Saturday afternoon after a flight from Lisbon, Portugal. Mr Queiroz, of Pirton in Worcestershire, aimed to circumnavigate the globe in less than 24 days and left Gloucestershire Airport for Malta on 28 February on the first leg of his 24,000-mile journey.

Mr Queiroz had hoped to complete the trip by 23 March, but was marooned by torrential rain in Hawaii.

The motor engineer, who stripped and reconstructed a Canadian-built Vans RV-6 to take him around the world, was hoping to beat the record currently held by Hans Georg Schmid.
