Two emerging young artists, Antoine Farrugia and Wojtek Brockdorff, are exhibiting their artistic works at the Societa’ Filarmonica “La Vittoria”, Parish Square, Mellieha. The exhibition of sculptures and paintings is being held in collaboration with the President and the Committee of La Vittoria Band Club.
Born in Mqabba, sculptor Antoine Farrugia is a self-taught artist who is only influenced by the love of the medium and the symbolic energy he derives from it to vent his deepest feelings. His works have been exhibited in various collective exhibitions in Malta. He has held two solo exhibitions at Old Hospital, Mqabba, in 2003, and at St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity, Valletta in 2004.
In the exhibition flyer, artist Patrick Galea wrote: “The stillness and chastity of Antoine’s sculptures forms may lead to an impression of cool calculation alien to his own rough – cut nature. Stillness and abstraction are hard-worn out of mental and emotional struggle. In its quite security this man of selected works is the exploration of new forces released from within the stone.”
Innovative artist Wojtek Brockdorff is a new face in the art scene in Malta. His early interest in aesthetics was nurtured while studying in the UK. He is now furthering his art studies and refines his techniques at the Malta School of Art, under the guidance of Anton Grech.
Wojtek’s paintings have been described as “work in progress – art in evolution”. The interesting work is as unique and different as the artist himself. All his paintings are non-representational. Collectively, his work is distinctive, genuine and certainly engaging. Where, one wonders, will Wojtek go next?
The exhibition is open until Sunday 28 May, from Monday to Saturday between 6pm and 9pm and on Sundays from 9am to noon and from 5pm to 9pm.
