The restoration division of the Resources and Infrastructure Ministry is carrying out restoration works at the chapel dedicated to the Assumption, better known as the Ta’ Qrejqca chapel in Qormi.

It was built by Baron Giacinto Cassia before 1653, on the remains of another chapel. Documents have been found showing that up to 1575, a certain Anton Cassia used to foot the costs for the celebration of a feast.

The nickname Qrejqca given to the chapel derives from a long-standing tradition, when pilgrims used to visit chapels or altars dedicated to the Assumption. Their pilgrimage would be concluded at the Ta’ Qrejqca chapel. The procurator would prepare a meal of fried pork – the portion known as the qarquca – plural qrejqca.

Minister Ninu Zammit said the restoration works are being done in three phases, involving the roof and walls, and the facade and chapel interior.
