Salini salt pans rehabilitation at an advanced stage

Malta Independent Friday, 8 February 2013, 14:57 Last update: about 13 years ago

The area of the Salini salt pans is being rehabilitated in a €7 million project which is now in an advanced stage and which should be concluded by the end of the year.

When it is finished salt will again start being produced there, the Ximenes Redoubt and fougasse will be restored, three huts which had been destroyed will be rebuilt, and the salt marsh will have been rehabilitated.

Rural Affairs Minister George Pullicino and Tourism Minister Mario de Marco have been to the site which will become a tourist destination. The works are partially funded by the EU’s European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development 2007-2013.

The Ximenes Redoubt will be turned into a visitors’ centre where information will be available on the history, archaeology, flora, fauna and ornithology of the place, and the traditional use of the salt pans. An underground tunnel will link the centre to the salt pans.
