New Prime Minister Joseph Muscat thanked his outgoing predecessor Lawrence Gonzi for his sterling work for the country. In his first words as Malta’s new head of government on PBS, Dr Muscat said that he has no qualms about saying how hard Dr Gonzi worked for this country in his time as Prime Minister. There were times that we did not see eye to eye but we both had the well-being of the country at heart. He also thanked all those who did not vote for the Labour Party and pledged that Malta will be theirs as well. “We will not change our slogan just because we have won the election. Malta belongs to all of us is what we said before, and is what we say now.” The results show that there were many people who voted Labour for the first time, Dr Muscat said. “We are humbled” by this result, he said We knew that Labour were in the lead as the surveys were showing, but it is the election that counts, and not surveys. The victory places great responsibility. We will have a new style of doing politics, as we pledged we would do. We want to remain close to the people, and we would like to work with everyone. We will not be carried away by this overwhelming result, he said.
