Rosette Thake has been elected as the PN’s secretary general in a ballot this evening, taking over from Chris Said who did not contest the post again at the request of PN leader Simon Busuttil.
She was uncontested for the post, and was elected with 70 votes in favour and 4 against. She is the first woman to hold the post.
Ms Thake was one of nine women elected to the Executive Council of the party in an election that took place a few weeks ago.
Ms Thake is a relative newcomer to the PN, though she has served on the party’s cultural wing AZAD and also chaired the PN’s first ever convention last year.
Addressing members of the executive right straight after her election, Ms Thake said the vote count was beyond her expectations.
She thanked her predecessor Chris Said for making her job easier through the groundwork he laid down during the past two years.
She said her main two aims are to strengthen the PN’s internal structures and bettering the party’s internal and external communication in order to get its political message across.
Ms Thake said she hopes to attract people who left the PN back to the party, as well as new people.
PN leader Simon Busuttil welcomed her election, saying that Ms Thake is taking over at a time when the PN is shifting gear and preparing itself to be a credible alternative government.
Dr Busuttil said that Ms Thake will be dedicating herself fully to the PN and will steer it through this next phase.
