Opposition Leader Simon Busuttil said that in a one-hour meeting with Shanghai Electric Power (SEP) he received more information about the agreement than was revealed by government over the past two years.
Simon Busuttil is on his way back from China, and gave short comments about his trip to Radio 101.
"China wants to strengthen their relations with Malta and is ready to do so with the PN. The PN is also ready to strengthen Maltese relations with China".
Relations with China over the past 2 years saw certain difficulties, he said, mostly due to the way the government handles its politics. "One example was the appointment of Sai Mizzi. A serious country does not have a minister's wife appointed to a public post". He mentioned that her high pay is another issue.
"The third reason is, that this person (Sai Mizzi), is not ready or prepared for the position she is in. She passed those who work in embassies who were ready to take this position".
"Another reason is the lack of transparency shown by this government. They sold a third of Enemalta to SEP, and have yet to publish the signed contracts".
"The SEP representatives said that the principle of transparency is fundamental and they are ready to be transparent. Will government now publish the contracts as we are still waiting. We want genuine cooperation with china but it must be built on transparency and honesty".
He said that today another scandal was revealed, regarding Gaffarena's attempt to purchase Palazzo Verdelin in Valletta. "He offered €3.5 million to buy 2/3rds of this building. Can you imagine someone trying to buy a building used as a police station. If Gaffarena thinks government will buy it from him, isnt't it obvious that there is corruption. Who is involved in this corruption?" He remained adamant that the PN will not allow this scandal to go on.
He said that when there is corruption everyone pays for it.
Dr Busuttil then turned to the Party Financing Bill, and said that the PN proposed a limit on the amount political parties can spend on an election. The more parties spend could mean the more obligations they have with those who donated funds.
He also spoke about a recent legal notice. "During the time of the Zonqor protests, government released a Legal Notice which says that criteria for an education institution to be recognised as a university were reduced. Instead of improving standards, we are lowering them in a serious manner".
"This Legal Notice gives government the ability, for an entity to receive the title of a university in the national interest. Tomorrow we asked for a discussion to occur in Parliament on this legal notice".
