The Church has an obligation to speak about the environment and about peoples’ responsibility when it comes to development, Father Christopher Caruana said on INDEPTH

Father Caruana comes from the Dominican order, and has been a priest for the past 15 years. He was interviewed on INDEPTH by The Malta Independent's editor-in-chief Rachel Attard.

During the interview, he was asked about the role of the church when it comes to the environment, and whether the church should be involved in such issues.

He said that a society that promotes freedom of expression must not censor anyone, and that the Church has a right to speak especially on issues regarding universal heritage

The Church has a right to speak about issues relating to everyone’s heritage, especially the environment, he said

“If there is a Church document that received universal appreciation and endorsement, it was the present Pope’s encyclical on the environment. He drew the attention of all government and people to pay more attention to our natural heritage.”

He spoke about the environment being taught in schools, and how the understanding now is that life depends on a system. “For life to flourish in that system, the system itself must be respected, otherwise everyone would suffer.”
