Judge hearing Yorgen Fenech bail case had bought boat from accused’s father

The judge who is expected to decree on a bail request by Yorgen Fenech had bought a boat from the alleged murder mastermind’s father, it has emerged.

Documents published on social media show that the judge had bought a 50-foot yacht named Spensierata from George Fenech in 2008.

Grixti was a magistrate at the time. He was promoted to judge in 2015.

Lawyer and Nationalist MP Jason Azzopardi, who is appearing for the Caruana Galizia family in court proceedings, said the documents prove that the judge had “done business” with the father of the accused.

The MP said it was no wonder that the judge had denied a request by Simon Busuttil and David Casa for the opening of a magisterial inquiry into the Panama Papers in January 2019.

“[He was] The only judge who referred to the Panama Papers as speculation,” Azzopardi wrote in a Facebook post.

He slammed the judge for hearing Fenech’s bail submissions on Wednesday. Judge Grixti said he would decree in chambers, but no decision has been forthcoming.

Azzopardi has flagged the matter with the Chief Justice.

On Wednesday, the prosecution argued against granting Yorgen Fenech bail, saying that the businessman had purchased grenades, firearms and poison over the dark web, paying with bitcoin.

The bail hearing was held on the same day that Fenech was indicted over his role in the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia. He will be facing a trial by jury at a later stage.
