PN promises ‘sustainable’ pensions system

Thursday, 16 September 2021, 19:34 Last update: about 4 years ago

The Nationalist Party has promised to introduce a substantial advance in the country’s current pensions system towards something which is more sustainable, just, and safe.

The PN proposed the creation of new sectors which create new quality jobs and therefore encourage future generations to have a pension from more than one source.

The PN also promised a “just system” to ensure that no pensioner would be suffering from injustices related to past reforms or lost contributions, with a mechanism being implemented in this regard.

Such a pension system would address the “alarming” rate of poverty and at-risk-of-poverty amongst pensioners, and the PN said that the system would work hand in hand with the COLA mechanism so that there are more realistic gradual increases and with measures which will specifically address inflation on basic objects.

The PN said it would encourage future pensioners to invest in or save in third pillar pension schemes and provide the necessary guarantees for this.

The PN’s statement was signed by party deputy leader David Agius.
