Newly appointed Infrastructure Minister Aaron Farrugia said on Wednesday that studies are ongoing so as to better understand what is happening in our roads in the hope of reducing the number of road accidents.

From the beginning of this year, a significant number of serious road accidents have taken place, with the number of victims in the first four months of the year already exceeding the total in the whole of 2021.

During a press conference which dealt with the launch of two electric buses, The Malta Independent asked on whether the Ministry is planning on doing anything to somehow reduce these road accidents from occurring.

In reply, Minister Farrugia confirmed that this matter is on his agenda as Infrastructure Minister.

“I requested road related reports so as to better understand how and why speed cameras are set up as well as to identify the speed allocated in our roads. This information will help me build the know-how, and eventually discuss with experts to properly understand what is happening and act accordingly,” Farrugia said.

Farrugia expressed his regret for all the road accidents that have occurred, saying that it was also very alarming to hear so many road accident reports at such a frequent rate.

Meanwhile, Minister Farrugia was also asked for an update on who will occupy the new post of CEO for Infrastructure Malta, since Fredrick Azzopardi resigned from his post, after four years.

In reply, Minister Farrugia said that the government has a list with a number of possible candidates that are being considered for this post.

He confirmed that discussions and the process of choosing another CEO are still ongoing.
