Former PN MP Karl Gouder has opted not to throw in his hat for the casual election to replace the late Robert Arrigo.

Gouder said that at this point in time he prefers to focus on his career as chief operating officer of the PN media.

First of all allow me to once again express my sincere condolences to Marina, Alan and Andrew, Robert was a good family friend and we will always remember him as such," he wrote on Facebook.

Arrigo died last week, aged 67.

“I have always looked at politics as a tool to make this country a better place. For the past 17 years I tried to do my very best to serve our people as a local councillor, mayor and MP for 12 years. Thank you for the trust you have shown in me over these years, I hope I did not let you down," Gouder added.

“Considering my electoral result last March, I believe that at this point in time my duty is to focus on my career especially as Chief Operating Officer of the Party media, and that is why I feel that I should dedicate my time to this and not contest the Casual Elections. I wish the very best to Albert and Emma. Being a member of parliament is the greatest privilege that the people can give you, however, this comes with great responsibility..."

Emma Portelli Bonnici, conversely, said that she will be contesting the casual election that will be held on Friday.

"It is because of my respect for and loyalty towards the people of the 10th district - especially those who voted for me in various preferences - and my respect for the democratic process in its totality that I have just submitted my nomination for the casual election, come what may," she wrote on Facebook.

This is what is necessary in a democratic country that recognises the importance of a seat in parliament and respects the electoral process that it is constitutionally bound to uphold, she said.

The other eligible candidate, Albert Buttigieg, has also submitted his nomination.
