Building a better society: SOS Malta shines light on four projects driving change

Sunday, 6 July 2025, 08:51 Last update: about 10 days ago

At a time when social inclusion, education and digital awareness are more important than ever, SOS Malta presents four powerful projects that are making a real difference to people's lives - from improving access to housing to tackling hate online and supporting young migrants.

Come HoMe focusing on housing with dignity

Funded by the EU's CERV programme, the Come HoMe project investigates housing discrimination against people with a migrant background in Malta, Greece and Italy. Through a mix of research and innovation, practical solutions have been developed, including Malta's first multilingual guide to the housing market. This essential resource, available in Maltese, English, Arabic and Spanish, helps both tenants and landowners navigate the private rental market, offering legal advice, cultural tips and step-by-step guidance.

HATEDEMICS focusing on combating online hate

Online hate speech is a growing threat. HATEDEMICS, coordinated by the Italian Fondazione Bruno Kessler and implemented locally by SOS Malta and the Victim Support Agency, empowers communities to fight back hate speech and hate crime. The project brings together journalists, media educators and young people in practical workshops to combat disinformation and provide participants with tools to fight back against digital hate.

Language Buddy focusing on mentorship for inclusion

Integration starts with communication. Language Buddy brings university students together with young refugees and migrants (aged 12 to 17) to create meaningful mentorships that boost language learning and social inclusion. With the aim of training 365 student mentors across Europe, including Malta, this project helps young migrants find their voice while nurturing the next generation of culturally aware educators.

VR for Education: Learning beyond limits

What if students could walk through ancient cities, dive into the ocean or explore the solar system - all without leaving the classroom? That's the promise of VR for Education, a pilot project bringing the power of virtual reality to three Maltese schools (independent and Church). Supported by the Atlas Community Involvement Fund, this initiative provides both the equipment, and the training needed to help teachers enhance learning in subjects like science, geography and Maltese. The feedback? Enthusiastic students, inspired teachers, and immersive lessons that truly stick. It's not just about using tech - it's about expanding horizons and transforming education in ways that are engaging, accessible and unforgettable.

Each of these projects is different but share a common goal: creating a more inclusive, informed and connected society. SOS Malta continues to work at the heart of this endeavour - building bridges, supporting communities and advocating for positive change.
