The Msida flyover project was inaugurated on Wednesday, and "today it is already evident that not only has it failed to solve the traffic problem in the area, but it has actually caused further congestion in several surrounding localities," the PN said.
"Even those who are not engineers could have easily predicted that this flyover would not resolve the bottlenecks in neighbouring problematic zones."
"If the Government truly wanted to act seriously, instead of rushing to build this monstrosity, Robert Abela's Government should have first addressed those underlying challenges. Yet, despite repeated warnings, the Government still chose to devastate the centre of Msida with a one-lane flyover."
"This means that even the smallest accident will bring everything to a standstill, including ambulances, other emergency vehicles and people on their way to Mater Dei Hospital. The Msida Local Council, led by a PN majority, has been raising these concerns with the Government for over a year and repeatedly requesting meetings with Minister Chris Bonett to discuss the flyover, among other issues. Instead, the Minister visited the site without even notifying the Local Council. It was only on Monday, when everything was ready for the ribbon-cutting, that the Minister finally agreed to go to Msida."
"The concerns of the Local Council reflect the frustrations of Msida residents and the many people who use this central locality on a daily basis. The Government of Robert Abela, who yesterday joined Chris Bonett to walk through an empty, one-lane flyover shortly before opening it to traffic, continues to demonstrate just how determined it is to steamroll over everyone."
"Within mere hours of its opening, it became clear that the Government's so-called plan simply did not work and commuters are still being forced to spend long periods stuck in traffic. This is the direct result of the stubbornness and lack of planning that have become the hallmark of this Government's infrastructural projects."
"Meanwhile, although it managed to build this monstrosity in the heart of Msida in under a year, the same Government has left Msida residents without a Police Station, closed for more than two years, without an Old People's Home, which was demolished years ago and is now just a car park, and without a Berġa for the last four years."
PN can only resort to 'fearmongering and negativity', PL says
The Labour Party replied in a statement and said that those who lack credibility resort only to “fearmongering and negativity.”
“The Nationalist Party once again confirms that it knows only how to criticise, instil fear, and above all, lie. But as always, it is incapable of offering solutions. Not even one,” the PL said.
The party said that if there is anyone who lacks credibility on infrastructural projects, it is precisely the Nationalist Party, “which left the country’s roads in a disastrous state when it was in government.”
The party noted that people have become accustomed to the Nationalist Party saying no to everything and opposing every ambitious project that looks to the future and offers a better tomorrow for our country.
The Msida Creek project is an infrastructural project that will give Msida a new lease of life, the party said.
“It is the fifth project of its kind carried out over the past 12 years, and it is entirely Made in Malta. We are proud that this work is being carried out by Maltese architects, engineers, and companies. It is a project built not only for today, but with a long-term vision to restore dignity to the Msida area through new open spaces. This is precisely the difference between a Labour Government that works and delivers, and an Opposition that practices nothing but Facebook politics: comfortably seated on the sidelines criticising everything while proposing nothing,” the PL said.
“The Labour Party is the only party that can guarantee infrastructural progress and serious investment that delivers long-term benefits for the Maltese and Gozitan people. The attacks and fear that the Opposition is trying to create will not stop us from continuing to implement ambitious projects in the best interest of the country.”
“While others talk, we build, invest, and deliver. This is the clear difference between those who believe in progress and those who remain stuck in the politics of ‘no’.”
