The Public Works Department has completed embellishment works in Narbona Square in Qormi over recent weeks, with an investment of approximately €500,000.
The project included the preparation of bases for 22 lighting poles and the excavation of nearly 500 metres of trenches to accommodate the necessary cabling for new lighting installations in the square, around the church and on the church parvis. The works also comprised the construction of around 500 square metres of new pavements and the laying of approximately two kilometres of new asphalt surfaces.
The Public Works Department also assisted the parish by providing professional architectural and engineering services for the restoration of the dome of St Sebastian's Parish Church, as well as the installation of new artistic lighting.
During a site visit, Parliamentary Secretary for Public Works Omar Farrugia said that the investment in the heart of Qormi aims to create a more attractive, safer and more accessible environment for residents, while revitalising the cores of villages and towns. He added that the Department carries out such projects in close collaboration with residents and various voluntary and ecclesiastical organisations.
Qormi Mayor Josef Masini Vento said that, through collaboration between the Public Works Department and the Local Council, an holistic project was delivered for the benefit of residents.
Engineer Mario Sammut explained that the works included the removal of overhead electrical cables and the excavation of new trenches to house them, in addition to the laying of nearly 2,000 square metres of new asphalt.
Parish priest Dun Ewkarist Zammit noted that, with the assistance of the Public Works Department, further projects will be undertaken, including the regeneration of the church parvis and the parish hall.
This investment forms part of a broader programme of works carried out by the Public Works Department in synergy with local councils, with such collaboration set to be further strengthened for the benefit of local communities.
