The Cleansing and Maintenance Division (CMD) has extended its street-cleaning services to residential roads in five additional localities, following new agreements with local councils.
The Parliamentary Secretary for Public Cleanliness, Glenn Bedingfield, announced that CMD has begun providing services in residential areas of Sliema and St Julian's in recent days. Similar services are expected to commence early next year in Żejtun, Mosta and Dingli.
With these new arrangements, CMD will now be operating daily in residential streets across 34 localities, directly affecting the quality of life of around 250,000 residents.
Bedingfield said discussions with the respective local councils had been ongoing for several months, focusing on how the service could be introduced effectively. He said the agreements demonstrate growing confidence among local councils in the division's operational capacity.
"The decision taken by these local councils reflects the will of residents to improve their quality of life," Bedingfield said, adding that CMD is in a position to deliver an efficient service through continued investment in resources and machinery. He attributed this investment to the country's economic strength, which allows for sustained improvements in public services.
Environment, Energy and Regeneration Minister Miriam Dalli said the agreements were an example of how collaboration between central government and local councils can deliver tangible results for residents. She said further investment would continue in resources, planning and technology to ensure cleaner, more attractive and more sustainable localities.
"Ultimately, a clean environment leads to healthier communities and a better quality of life for everyone," Dalli said.
CMD Director General Ramon Deguara reiterated the division's commitment to maintaining a cleaner and more orderly country. He said the aim is for every part of Malta to reflect a culture of respect and responsibility, where residents and visitors alike can take pride in their surroundings.
