The Planning Authority has opened applications for a new tranche of the Irrestawra Darek u l-Villaġġ initiative, specifically targeting Grade 1 and Grade 2 scheduled buildings located outside Urban Conservation Areas (UCAs) across Malta and Gozo.

"Backed by a dedicated €2 million allocation, the scheme supports the restoration and maintenance of Malta's architectural heritage. Eligible applicants may receive up to €100,000 for Grade 1 buildings and up to €50,000 for Grade 2 buildings. In cases of multiple ownership, each owner may benefit from a maximum of €15,000, or a consolidated application may qualify for the full capped amount," the Planning Authority said.

"The scheme covers a wide range of conservation works, including façade restoration, specialist stone cleaning, consolidation works, repairs or replacement of traditional timber or wrought-iron elements, and restoration of balconies and other traditional architectural features. Works must adhere to established conservation standards and, where required, be carried out under the appropriate planning permit and approved method statements."

Application process

Phase 1 - Submissions for the Expression of Interest opened on Monday, 9 March 2026 at 9am and will close on 16 March 2026 at 3pm. "Late submissions will not be accepted. Eligible applicants will then be invited to proceed to Phase 2."

Phase 2 is the request for funding. A Perit must submit the full request for funding via the Planning Authority's eApps system within two months of receiving notification from the Authority. Required documentation includes site plans, photographic evidence, a works method statement and the official Bill of Quantities.

Works and requirements

Works requiring planning consent must be supported by a valid planning permit and approved Restoration Method Statement. Maintenance works may not require a permit but must still be detailed in an appropriate works method statement. Successful applicants will receive a Letter of Conditional Approval, outlining eligible works and including a deadline of 48 months for completion.

Who can apply

The scheme is open to private individuals, legal entities, undertakings carrying out economic activity, and registered NGOs.
