Momentum on Friday announced a three-part proposal to transition Malta's foreign policy from one of convenience to one rooted in principle.
The first pillar focuses on professionalizing the diplomatic corps by replacing political appointments with a merit-based system. Momentum plans to introduce a Foreign Service Act to establish clear career paths, competitive entry exams, and promotions based on performance rather than political favours. This shift aims to prevent brain drain and ensure Malta is represented by experts with deep institutional memory.
The second pillar addresses constitutional neutrality. Momentum argues that neutrality should not equate to silence or indifference. Instead, they propose an active pursuit of peace and social progress, pledging to speak out against human rights violations and war crimes globally while remaining militarily non-aligned.
Finally, the group emphasizes the protection of the Human Rights Convention, arguing against any attempts to weaken it under the guise of managing migration.
Cassola asserted that Malta's neutrality is an asset only if used honestly to defend moral standards. By combining professional representation with a courageous moral compass, Momentum seeks to bolster Malta's international influence and ensure the country is never complicit in global injustices through silence.
