Political party Momentum has welcomed the strong opposition from Sliema Mayor John Pillow and Gżira Mayor Neville Chetcuti regarding the proposed land reclamation and lido project along the Sliema and Gżira seafront.

The party notes that these positions validate concerns it previously raised about the privatization of public sea space and the obstruction of iconic promenades for commercial gain.

Momentum candidate for the 7th and 10th districts, Pierre Schembri Wismayer, emphasized that residents should not be forced to sacrifice quality of life for speculative development.

Momentum leader and candidate on the 9th and 10th districts, Prof. Arnold Cassola, reiterated that the coastline is a national heritage that must remain accessible and protected for everyone rather than surrendered for private profit.

In a separate development regarding law enforcement, Momentum has addressed Minister Byron Camilleri's announcement of on-the-spot fines for non-resident foreigners starting June 1.

While the party welcomes the measure as a belated adoption of its own long-standing proposal, leaders have questioned the distinction being made between Maltese citizens and foreigners.

Cassola and candidate Mark Camilleri Gambin argue that lawbreakers should be treated equally regardless of nationality.

They maintain that whether the offense involves illegal rubbish disposal or vandalism, immediate fines should apply to all to avoid populist trends and ensure a fair, consistent application of the law across society.
