Two German tourists aged 41 and 39 were arrested after police identified them as the driver and passenger involved in dangerous driving incidents filmed and shared on social media, the police said in a statement.

Police said that they received several videos on Sunday showing a Kia vehicle being driven dangerously on different roads and at different times.

An investigation was launched immediately to identify both the vehicle and the driver, the statement said.

Through CCTV footage and further investigations, police identified the vehicle and later traced the suspected driver to an establishment in St Julian's.

Police officers went to the location, carried out a search and stopped two men matching the descriptions.

Investigators established that one of the men was allegedly the driver of the vehicle, while the other had filmed the incidents, with the videos being found on his mobile phone, the statement said.

The 41-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, while the 39-year-old passenger was arrested on suspicion of distributing footage showing dangerous driving on social media.

Police said the arrest linked to the filming and distribution of the footage was made under new legal amendments that came into force in March.

Under the amended law, anyone who produces or distributes material showing people breaching traffic laws with the aim of normalising dangerous driving or encouraging others to do the same constitutes as a criminal offence, the statement said.

Investigations are ongoing and both men are expected to be arraigned under arrest in the coming days.

The video footage seen by The Malta Independent showed two more passengers in the vehicle, alongside the driver and the man filming the video.
