A 51-year-old cyclist from St Paul's Bay suffered grievous injuries in an accident in Mġarr on Sunday morning, the police said in a statement.

Police assistance was requested at around 7am in Triq il-Mosta.

Preliminary investigations showed that the man was injured after, for some reason, he fell while riding his bicycle and subsequently crashed into an Iveco van being driven by a 45-year-old man from Żejtun, the police statement said.

A medical team was called to the scene, and the cyclist was taken to Mater Dei Hospital by ambulance, where he was later certified as suffering from grievous injuries.

Police investigations are ongoing.
