A 25-year-old man from Ħamrun was arrested during a traffic inspection in Birżebbuġa on Saturday night after allegedly being found in possession of drugs intended for trafficking, the police said in a statement.

On Saturday at around 10.30pm in Triq Għar Dalam, police officers stopped a Toyota Yaris for inspection.

While officers were requesting the driver's documents, the man appeared to be acting suspiciously, the police statement said.

Following reasonable suspicion that illegal substances could be inside the vehicle, police carried out a search and discovered around 30 sachets containing a substance suspected to be cocaine, around 30 pills suspected to be MDMA, and another bag containing a substance suspected to be cannabis.

Police said the drugs were found in circumstances indicating they were not intended for personal use.

Items allegedly related to drug trafficking, as well as a considerable amount of cash, were also found inside the vehicle, the statement said.

The man is currently being held at the Floriana police lock-up and is expected to be arraigned in court in the coming days.

Police investigations are ongoing.
