Nigel Baldacchino explores the materiality of photography in new solo exhibition

Photography, materiality and curation converge in the only distance, a solo exhibition by artist Nigel Baldacchino opening at Jo Borg Gallery in Sliema on 24 October.

Originally conceived as a book, the project moves into the gallery space, offering both the artist and viewers an opportunity to engage with the photographic series from a different perspective. The transition from page to wall opens up new possibilities for interpretation, exploring the relationship between images, materials and the spaces in which they are presented.

For Baldacchino, curation is an integral part of the artistic process rather than an afterthought. The exhibition's presentation has been developed alongside the photographs themselves, guided by an intuitive understanding of the elements that connect the series. Through the interplay of form and material, the artist examines how the presentation of an image can influence its meaning.

At the heart of the exhibition lies a fundamental question: what constitutes a photograph?

Unlike painting, photography is not confined to a single physical medium. Images can be printed and displayed in different ways, with each format carrying its own associations and shaping the viewer's experience. This question becomes particularly relevant in digital photography, where an image initially exists as a file without a physical form of its own. A medium is needed to give it a tangible presence.

Baldacchino explores this relationship by presenting images across a variety of media, shapes and sizes. Some photographs appear more than once, with variations in their physical presentation forming a deliberate part of the exhibition's artistic language.

These choices are not intended simply to demonstrate the different ways photography can be presented. Instead, they contribute to the meaning of the work, encouraging viewers to consider how an image changes through its material form and the context in which it is encountered.

While the book offers one way of giving the photographs a physical presence, the gallery provides an alternative space for exploration. Through repetition, variation and material experimentation, the only distance invites audiences to look beyond the image itself and reflect on the role that its medium plays in shaping its meaning.

The exhibition opens on 24 October 2026 at 7pm and runs until 21 November 2026 at Jo Borg Gallery in Sliema.

Gallery opening hours are available at www.joborggallery.com. Private viewings can be arranged by emailing [email protected].
