Jason Sultana from San Gwann was charged in court for carrying out work on cars in his father’s garage without a permit or a licence to do so.
Sultana pleaded guilty to the charge but maintained that he did not make any money out of it as he only helped out friends and relatives who had problems with their cars.
PC 265 told the court that police had received reports that work was being carried out in a garage in San Gwann which did not have the necessary permits. On investigation, the police officer said he had found Sultana working on two cars. The defendant admitted he did not have a licence to carry out such work.
Alfred Farrugia from the Trade Services Department confirmed that the department did not hold any certification or records on Sultana.
Cross examined by the police, Sultana explained how he had been working on two cars, one that belonged to a colleague and the other to his cousin. He confirmed that he worked in the service department of a car company and is quite knowledgeable about cars and other related functions.
Gordon Schembri told the court that as Sultana had been recommended by other colleagues he decided to take his car to the defendant for engine repairs. He confirmed that Sultana had only charged him for the engine repairs and not for labour.
The case continues.
Magistrate Dr Silvio Meli presided over the court.
