A Two-act satirical drama by Lino Grech

Malta Independent Friday, 24 February 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Three youths, Aldo, Mark and George lament the lack of cash while sharing their last joint. They challenge each other to come up with some bright idea to get more cash to satisfy their ever-increasing need of drugs. After a disastrously failed attempt to rob the village chemist, they embark on a more ambitious project. They set their sights on “Ganni”, an old fellow, living on his own. In the process they are forced to accept a new member in their team, Monica.

The second act opens with the four youths standing trial for murdering an innocent man, Ganni, to satisfy their egoistic needs. Accused by the three pillars of mankind, the state, the Church and their families; the indicted stand their ground, defiantly. The President of Court has the daunting task of keeping the trial in balance; but the reason of the trial remains: Who killed Ganni, the innocent victim? Will justice be done? What will the jury’s verdict be?

“Who killed Ganni?” is a two act satirical drama, penned by Lino Grech, in which it leaves a mark in every soul. The stylistic colloquial verses, the youth’s visions, the different perspectives of the pillars of society and the power of the story itself, places this piece of writing as one of the best works of Grech’s repertoire. It is mainly satirical because of the way the youths interact with each other, their outlook on society, and their attitude towards the court, the President and the pillars of society. The play is serious, yet humorously dark and witty!

Under the direction of Ivan De Battista and with prominent actors such as Simone De Battista, Silvio Catania, Manuel Cutajar, Rennie Schembri, Rita Camilleri, Louis Gatt, Matthew Alfino, Jesmond Kris Bugeja, Josette Sacco, Joe Camilleri and Alfred Briffa, Atturi Salesjani are putting up this satirical drama at the Salesian Theatre, Sliema on Saturday at 7.30 pm and Sunday at 6.30 pm.
