An aircraft that was used to transport passengers and cargo during the Second World War has been transferred from Safi to the Malta Aviation Museum in Ta’ Qali.
The operation to transport the aircraft, a DC3, started at around 10pm and finished at around 4am. It involved around 60 people including members of the police force, soldiers of the Armed Forces, Malta International Airport staff and staff from the Malta Aviation Museum.
From Safi, the aircraft was transported to Ta’ Qali via Luqa, Qormi and Zebbug on Monday to Tuesday night.
During WWII, the DC3 was popular for many reasons: she was larger, faster and more luxurious than previous planes, more economical to operate and safe. More than 11,000 DC3s were built between 1935 and 1946 in the United States, Japan and Russia.
