This novel takes us back to the year 1870 in Birkirkara, where Lieni lived with her father Katald, a cotton picker by profession.

The two were honest people; Lieni respected her father and was especially devoted to him, while Katald worked as hard as he could to earn a living for both of them.

The beautiful Lieni soon attracted the attention of Pawlu, the son of the cotton plantations owner Indrì, who sometimes employed Katald on his fields.

Lieni was also courted by Inspector Lonzu, who, after being refused by the girl because of her love for Pawlu, decided to take matters into his own hands.

To what extent did Lonzu go to see revenge, and what part did Marì, Pawlu’s sister, play in uncovering the mysteries that had made Lieni and Katald’s lives so miserable?
