Course On business ethics

Malta Independent Wednesday, 24 May 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

A course on business ethics is being held to improve business relations by fostering ethical conduct and standards. Ethics has become the mainstay for many businesses today, not simply as correct behaviour or as a code of conduct, but because it is inherent in human nature and changes characters into virtuous ones. People enjoy doing business with virtuous people – those whom they feel they can trust.

The course is conducted by Dr Pierre Mallia, who lectures in ethics at the University of Malta in various faculties. He became interested in business ethics through his involvement in ethics in the medical field, realising that many industries come into contact with medicine and unfortunately are driven solely by the ethic of making money rather than fostering the ethos of medicine – the field they are serving

Historically, business started as a service. Business ethics foster the need to rediscover the service attitude and ethos of the businessman. It serves to remove the connotation of “only business” as something negative.
