Maltapost Contributes to Rainforest Foundation

Malta Independent Friday, 18 August 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Following the recent successful Sting concert in Malta and the issue of a Commemorative Miniature Sheet on this occasion by the Philatelic Bureau of Maltapost, the Rainforest Foundation recently received a contribution of £2,500 from Maltapost as a result of Maltapost’s commitment to donate a percentage of its income from sales of the Miniature Sheet to the foundation.

The donation was presented to Rainforest Foundation fund-raising manager Emily Strike by Maltapost Chief Officer Marketing and Business Development John Agius. During this presentation, Mr Agius also donated a number of autographed Miniature Sheets, which the foundation will be auctioning on-line to help with their fund-raising.

Emily Strike said the Maltapost contribution will go towards the foundation’s work supporting indigenous peoples and traditional populations of the world’s rainforests in their effort to protect the environment and uphold their human rights.

The Rainforest Foundation also concentrates on improving the capacity of their partner in-country NGOs and indigenous organisations so that they can eventually become self-sufficient.

The Sting Miniature Sheet, which has been selling extremely well both in Malta and abroad, incorporates a re-issue of a previously issued stamp depicting environmental care, originally designed by student Bettina Paris as part of a four-stamp Children’s Design set issued in October 2000.

This particular stamp had been chosen as Sting is one of the major founders of the Rainforest Foundation and helps to organise a number of events.

For those who wish to make a contribution to the Rainforest Foundation with the acquisition of this unique souvenir of the Sting concert, the Sting Commemorative Sheet is still available from all Maltapost retail outlets in Malta and Gozo, and from the Philatelic Bureau of Maltapost (telephone 2123 9153, e-mail [email protected]) or from the Maltapost Website www.maltapost.com.
