Tony Dyson of Star Wars fame is now a consultant for films, TV and recording studios in the UK and US and is actively engaged in promoting Malta’s talent abroad.

When Tony stated “Hollywood needs you; they just don’t know it yet,” he was asked to explain what he meant.

And Tony said: “In the past 15 years, ever since I’ve been living in Malta I have made two major observations. First there is an amazing amount of raw talent across the whole spectrum of the performing arts – singers, dancers, actors, musicians, writers – and the second is that 99 per cent have no idea how to promote themselves or how to become professional in their chosen field.

“Even worse, they have no real concept of the problems and challenges they will face if they do land themselves a professional job. And when it comes to competing on an international level they really need our support to give them the chance they so richly deserve.

“Abroad, students study with a private teacher or attend a college in their chosen field. Later, if they are passionate about turning professional, they will either progress by attending lectures or take on a personal coach; these have many titles such as ‘screen coach’, ‘celebrity coach’ and ‘personality coach’, but their aim is always the same, to provide a boot camp environment that will teach their students how to survive and succeed in the real world.

“For instance, subjects they would cover would be self promotion, such as how to prepare a portfolio, how to run an Internet blog and self syndication; another subject would be net working, keeping a data base of contacts and how to approach agents.

“But this is really only the tip of the iceberg, there are still crucial subjects such as expectations, self-esteem and learning how to combat stress, only then do I really believe we can start to show the world what Malta has to offer. This is why I have set up a programme called “Celebrity Coach” that complements the hard work many of the independent schools in the performing arts are achieving in Malta.”
