Malta Independent Wednesday, 19 August 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

A police officer and a prison warder were injured after trying to stop an inmate from slashing himself with a blade in the Forensic Unit within Corradino Correctional Facility at Mount Carmel hospital, Attard last Sunday.

Inmate Clyde Bonavia, 25, pleaded not guilty to causing an injury to police officer George Casha with the blade and of resisting prison warder Grazio Attard in a scuffle.

Bonavia was charged with causing light wounds to the warder, of injuring them and other police officers, of threatening them, not following their orders and distressing them while carrying out their duty. He was also accused of disturbing public peace and of causing havoc in Hamrun police station.

Defence counsel Gianella Caruana Curran and Joseph Giglio appealed for the accused to be psychologically assessed to determine his condition although a psychologist already monitors him. The request was upheld.
