Valletta finished in the bottom 10 places among 43 European destinations listed in a survey carried out in Britain to find out which were the best for short-term holidays.
The survey was carried out among 5,000 British tourists by the magazine Which?
Britons have rated the Polish city of Krakow the best in Europe for a short break for the third consecutive year.
Alicante was at the bottom of the ranking of 43 countries.
The consumer champion asked holidaymakers to rate recent trips to European cities across a range of categories including quality of the cultural attractions, accommodation, shopping, food, and value for money.
Krakow comes top of the list with a city score of 93 per cent and is the only city in the survey of 4,704 Which? members to receive five stars for value for money. Krakow also receives an impressive five-star rating for food, putting it ahead of lauded culinary destinations such as Verona, Lisbon and Madrid.
Valletta scored very badly among British tourists interviewed for its shopping experience and food and drink offered, as well as for overcrowding. It obtained a better review for its architecture and culture, as well as accommodation. Malta’s capital city scored 78%.
Seville and Valencia, in Spain finished second and third place, followed by Berlin and Amsterdam.
