SkolaSajf students following training sessions to teach them on different modes of transport, road safety and emergency situations amongst other salient topics, the Ministry for Transport said. This is all in an effort to encourage diversification of the modes of transport within the next generation in an effort for better efficiency and less environmental impact.
Bonett visited St Thomas More College Middle and Secondary school in Żejtun to follow training sessions organized by Transport Malta for children who attend SkolaSajf. The agency said that these training sessions are being done to raise awareness amongst youth on the different modes of transport and road safety.
During the visit, Bonett said that this is proof of the government’s commitment to bring about safer and more sustainable transport habits from a young age. “It is our responsibility to educate the next generation on the use of various means of transportation, promote walking for short distances and always being prudent,” he said.
Laura Galea, Assistant Manager at Transport Malta for Sustainability & EU Affairs said that it is important for children to learn to integrate various means of transport, including walking, cycling, public transport and carpooling in their lives from an early age. She added in this way the next generation will be accustomed to a travel experience that is more efficient and better for the environment.
Galea said that road safety was the primary goal of these lessons which taught students how to cross the road safely, wear helmets when riding a bike and respect traffic signals. She added that during these sessions, the students were also trained for cases of fire and taught about ethics and biodiveristy
Galea said that the sessions include interactive workshops and other activities designed to educate the students on the benefits and importance of different means of transport and road safety. She added that these sessions will be provided to over 1,500 students attending SkolaSajf.
