The Maltese Ġbejna tan-nagħaġ has been recognised as Malta's first Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). The list aims to promote and protect the names of quality agricultural products and foodstuffs.

Writing on Facebook, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola hailed the news as another important milestone for Maltese and Gozitan shepherds, producers, and consumers.

"For the first time, we have managed-after long years of discussions and intense negotiations-to have a Maltese food product included in the same list of international foods such as Italy's Parmigiano Reggiano and Greece's Feta cheese. This achievement means that not only will we, the Maltese and Gozitans, who protect and promote the ġbejna tan-nagħaġ abroad and to tourists, but Europe itself will market this Maltese product as an artisanal and regional specialty, unique in the world."

"Thanks to everyone involved-activists, animal herders-who worked together to achieve this result. This is how we can continue to safeguard our Maltese and Gozitan heritage and traditions. This is how we make the most of the European Union," she said.

Malta was the only EU country not to have a food product on the EU's protected food heritage list. The Commission, this newsroom is informed, has approved the dossier and should be making the official announcement soon.
