The Centre for Cultural and Heritage Studies at the Institute of Tourism Studies will be organising two activities in connection with the subject of Dark Tourism. The aim of these activities is to increase awareness about the intriguing topic of Dark Tourism among the ITS students in particular and the public in general.
This seminar reflects the movement of tourism away from the average ‘sand and sea’ type activity. The tourist product has taken new roads and wide-ranging interests. If Malta is to remain competitive in this sector, we need to understand trends that have been taking place abroad and get to grips with the realities of the niche tourism markets.
Besides local speakers, the seminar will include a presentation by Mr Malcolm Hanson, who is, in his own words, “a ghost walker, a ghost hunter and a ghost writer”.
He has already written a book about the ghosts of Valletta and has also held a number of walks on this theme. After his participation in the seminar, MrHanson will also conduct a Valletta Ghost walk. The two activities are complementary to each other, and should raise the interest of any members of the public wishing to become more intimately acquainted with Valletta’s ghostly inhabitants!
The seminar on dark tourism will be held on 10 December at the ITS assembly hall at 6.30pm, while the ghost walk will take place on 12 December at 7.30pm, meeting place at City Gate. As the numbers for the ghost walk are limited, places will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
The Ghost Walk of Valletta will take about 90 minutes.
